Had my first birth there and about to have my second there. All the midwives and staff are personable, understanding, and listen to your needs. I even had some confusion with insurance, needed more verification, and had a lot of questions. They provided all the extra time I needed whether for first mom jitters or insurance questions. They are always patient and kind. I think of the staff at Alaska Family Health & Birth Center as family. I highly recommend them. This facility looks nice and it felt nice at first. But then, I felt like care was lacking in regards to how much they actually do. It felt like I was going there just to talk. They really don't do any examinations but rather hand them to you to perform yourself. I consider that a positive difference but it also added to the overall vibe of them not really doing much. I also felt like the birthing class was too laid back and not enough specifically was being taught but rather it went on any tangent the group ended up going on. This was a 4 hour "class" and after 1.5 hours I was ready to go and I actually left early. Finally, at 37 weeks pregnant, I find myself without care for the remainder of my pregnancy which is not upsetting to me but rather a reflection of the type of care to expect from this facility. I called and canceled my appointment with the front desk. I was asked if I wanted to speak with a midwife and I said no but I will see you guys next week. I was then called anyway by a midwife named Manga and pressured to come in that day or the next day, I was interrogated on why I didn't want to come, to which I said that I didn't feel well. She kept hinting around that my appointments are important and that if I don't come to my appointments regularly then they could not care for me. Which is understandable. But I can certainly cancel one appointment? ? I asked her if I didn't come in that afternoon or that week was she saying that they would drop me from their care and she said "Yes, that's what I am saying". Rediculous! I flat out hung up on her at that point. When I go into labor, I will waddle myself straight into the nearest hospital (if I can't find anyone else as I am not a high risk pregnancy) rather than be treated this way. I refuse to be bullied or given an ultimatum. Thanx! A group of kind, caring, compassionate, well educated individuals to support your through your birth experience.
